Latest News - June 2013

Four of our members sat London College of Music grade exams in Irish Traditional Music on 26/27 June. Molly Walls and Caoimhe O'Kane did the Grade 6 exam in fiddle and tin whistle respectively, while Jane and Cara Walls were Grade 4 entries in uilleann pipes and harp respectively. No results yet but indications are that everyone successfully passed so well done to all! Our thanks also to Catherine Sands of Ballycastle CCE/Loughguile Community Afterschools Club for her help in arranging the girls' participation.

Congratulations to our two competitors at Feis Charn Tochair on Saturday, 15th June. Padraig Mullan and Caoimhe O'Kane were joint winners of the Yr 5-Yr 7 tin whistle competition and Caoimhe also won the Yr 6-Yr 7 fiddle. They then teamed up with Lorcan Darragh to play in the winning traditional group (pictured below).

May 2013

Good to see the numbers up again at the Yew Tree Feis this year. Our prize winners are pictured - Jane Walls was second in the P6-P7 miscellaneous section playing the uilleann pipes and Caoimhe O'Kane won the P6-P7 tin whistle and was second in the P6-P7 fiddle. Well done, girls!

Well done to all our competitors at the Antrim fleadh this year, especially to Molly, Jane and Cara Walls who won the U-12 trio. Molly and Jane also won the U-12 duet and, in their solo competitions, Molly won the fiddle and was second in the fiddle slow air. Jane won both the uileann pipes and uileann pipes slow air and Cara was second in the harp slow air.
Representing Ceoltoiri Crosskeys in the grupai cheoil and ceili band competitions, our members didn't manage to win any of their competitions, but all successfully qualified for the Ulster fleadh. Molly, Jane and Cara were joined by Caoimhe O'Kane and Nicole Nugent in the U-12 grupa ceoil while Molly and Caoimhe also played in the ceili band. Caoimhe Purvis and Roisin Magee were in the 15-18 grupa ceoil that came second.

April 2013

Pictured below is our U-12 trio who came 2nd at this year's Derry fleadh. In their solo competitions, Caoimhe O'Kane won the tin whistle and Padraig Mullan was second. This result was repeated in the tin whistle slow air while Caoimhe also won the traditional singing in English and was third in the fiddle slow air. Nicole Nugent won the button accordion and, with Caoimhe, took part in the duet competition but was unplaced. In other age groups, Hugh Mulholland won both the banjo and mandolin competitions at senior level and we were also represented in the 12-15 tin whistle by Aoife Gribbin and in the 15-18 fiddle by Caoimhe Purvis. Although neither were placed, they played well and should take heart from their performances. Well done to all our members who took part and good luck to those who qualified for the Ulster fleadh to be held in July.

L-R - Padraig Mullan, Nicole Nugent, Caoimhe O'Kane.

Congratulations to Caoimhe O'Kane on her achievements at Derry Feis this year. She came second in all three classes she took part in - the U-12 tin whistle, U-12 fiddle and U-15 traditional singing. She's pictured below with the winner of the traditional singing, Grainne Ni Domhnaill from Letterkenny.

March 2013

Classes finished on Saturday, 23rd March, and won't resume until the autumn, so thanks are due to all the tutors, pupils and parents for their support this year and to all at Anahorish Primary School for facilitating our classes each week.

For those interested in continuing to play during the summer, we're planning a visit to a music group in Donegal in September or October. We're currently working on a list of common tunes and, when it's finalised, we'll post it here for pupils to download and learn. A few practices may also be scheduled during the spring/summer months.

Our monthly sessions for March, held in The Elk, were very enjoyable and well attended. The junior session, in particular, continues to thrive so thanks to all those who came along and supported them. Our next session will be in The Thatch on Thursday, 4th April.

With the Derry fleadh coming up on Saturday, 13th April, the organisers would like entries for the competitions to be submitted by Wednesday, 13th March, so any members of our branch who are thinking of competing should contact a committee member or use the Contact Us tab before then. Additional information, including competition rules are available on the Fleadh Information page.
